how this number is made

V8 · the arithmetic

the unit$0.05 per Fast GPU minute · Basic plan $10/month = 3.3 hr/month of Fast GPU time, stated as 200 minutes on the plan comparison page. Annual billing is $96/year ($8/month), i.e. $0.04 a minute. Extra Fast time is $4/hr on every plan.

the meter0.8 Fast GPU minutes per SD prompt; a prompt is the smallest thing that can be bought and returns a grid of images

the sumRestored on 14/9/2026 with the unit corrected. Both numbers are declared by Midjourney: the plan comparison page gives Basic $10/month for 200 Fast minutes ($0.05 a minute) and the GPU Speed page gives 'SD Prompt 0.8 minutes' ('Processing one image prompt usually takes about one minute of GPU time'). 0.8 x $0.05 = $0.04. WHAT CHANGED SINCE THE WITHDRAWAL: the entry was withdrawn because $0.01 - the $0.04 prompt divided by the four images in a grid - is our arithmetic and not Midjourney's listing. That division is still not defensible, but the $0.04 is: it is the price of the smallest thing Midjourney sells, and rule 3 of this project counts what is spent to reach one usable result, not the cost of the cheapest fragment of a job. A buyer who wants one image pays $0.04, because the grid cannot be bought smaller. The number in the column is therefore the prompt, and the derivation says so.

the verdictCHEAP · cheapest third for this operation

the catchAn HD prompt costs 1.3 GPU minutes = $0.065; Creative/Subtle Upscale 2 minutes = $0.10; Edit Model SD prompt 1 minute = $0.05; Omni Reference (V7) 2 minutes = $0.10; a grid upscale in Discord is free. Turbo mode doubles the Fast time spent. From the Standard plan ($30/month) up, Relax mode gives unlimited images and the marginal cost per image falls to zero. Turbo is not supported in V8.1. Plan: Basic.
